The California Ecology and Conservation (CEC) program is an immersive, semester-long field course offered to students across the UC system. Each spring, summer, and fall, a cohort of 27 students conducts field research at selected UC Natural Reserve System sites—including Sagehen Creek Field Station.
Over the course of the program, students:
- Complete independent and team-based research projects
- Learn a range of field ecology methods and data collection techniques
- Present their findings in oral, written, and poster formats
Participants build skills in scientific writing, public speaking, and ecological analysis, while deepening their understanding of California’s diverse ecosystems.

In Summer 2024, students in the California Ecology and Conservation program conducted original field research at Sagehen Creek Field Station. Their findings were published in

Projects explored local ecology, forest management, and climate impacts using the diverse habitats and research infrastructure at Sagehen.
