Adventure-Risk-Challenge (ARC) is a transformative education and leadership program for high school youth, combining literacy, outdoor adventure, and community engagement.
Since 2004, Sagehen has served as a home base for ARC summer immersion programs. Participants build confidence and leadership skills while improving academic and communication abilities through experiential learning in the Sierra Nevada.
Program Overview
This 6-week summer immersion program is designed for motivated English Language Learner (ELL) students with leadership potential. ARC combines intensive literacy instruction with place-based, outdoor education to address academic gaps while building confidence and real-world skills.
After completing the program, students give back through local service projects, public outreach, and mentoring new participants. ARC continues to support them with tutoring and alumni events throughout high school. Many graduates become leaders in their communities and are the first in their families to attend college—we couldn’t be prouder.
Why it Matters
In the Truckee-Tahoe School District, approximately 25% of students are designated as ELL. Of those, 90% are performing below grade level and are at risk of failing the High School Exit Exam. More than 60% do not graduate—trends that reflect broader patterns across California.
High-potential ELL students often lack access to summer programs that could help them succeed. ARC fills that gap. Research shows that combining literacy instruction with meaningful outdoor leadership experiences can improve student performance by up to two grade levels in just six weeks.
