Chickadee Memory & Cognition at Sagehen

The Mountain Chickadee research program at Sagehen Creek Field Station—led by Dr. Vladimir Pravosudov and his team at the University of Nevada, Reno—is one of the most robust long-term studies of avian cognition in natural environments. Over more than two decades, researchers have explored how spatial memory, learning, and decision-making are shaped by ecological pressures in the Sierra Nevada.

Mountain Chickadees rely on the ability to cache thousands of food items and retrieve them months later. These behaviors make them an ideal natural model for investigating how cognitive traits evolve under selection—and how memory, genetics, and brain structure interact with fitness.

“Using RFID-equipped smart feeders and a network of 200+ monitored nest boxes, we quantify spatial learning and memory in wild chickadees. Our work tracks individual performance and explores how cognition links to survival and reproductive success.”

Current projects include investigations into elevational effects on hippocampal development, trade-offs between flexibility and memory, genetic correlates of spatial cognition, and acoustic divergence across populations. The integration of behavioral ecology, neurobiology, and genomics provides a window into how harsh environments shape intelligence in the wild.
