The communal kitchen at Sagehen Creek Field Station is fully equipped to support both individuals and groups in preparing meals during their stay. Whether you’re cooking alone or working as a team, this space encourages shared meals, collaboration, and a sense of community.
Most visitors prepare their own meals. Larger groups may bring a designated cook, but all users are expected to clean up after themselves and leave the space cleaner than they found it. Please discuss any catering plans with the Station Director in advance to ensure compliance with all site policies and safety procedures.
Smaller groups may use the Apartment, which includes a self contained kitchen.
Orientation and Safety
When you arrive, the Station Director will review:
- Fire safety and proper use of the gas stove and ventilation system
- Cleaning responsibilities and expectations
- Trash disposal rules and seasonal differences
- The prohibition of food in cabins
Kitchen Equipment and Supplies
- Commercial appliances: 8 burner gas stove, 2 ovens, automatic fire suppression hood, 3 sinks including a triple basin dish sink, and a microwave
- Food storage: Shared refrigerators and freezers, plus labeled, mouse proof pantry boxes
- Cooking equipment: Pots, pans, baking dishes, knives, cutting boards, utensils, blender, mixer, can opener, and measuring tools
- Coffee equipment: 2 drip coffee makers with thermoses, 3 large dispensers (for coffee or hot water), and an electric grinder
- Serving items: Plates, silverware, cups, wine glasses, and pitchers
- Cleaning supplies: Dish soap, bleach, Windex, sponges, mops, and garbage bags
- Linen: Barmop towels and hot pads are provided. Please wash them before you leave
Trash and Waste
- Spring through fall: Dumpster service is provided on site
- Winter: Guests are responsible for packing out all trash
What to Bring
- Food: Grocery stores are located 10 miles away in Truckee. Reno, about 45 minutes away, offers bulk shopping options like Costco
- Consumable supplies: Napkins, paper towels, zip top bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and containers for leftovers
- Field lunch supplies: Paper bags, reusable containers, forks, and snacks for day trips
- Optional items: Paper plates, your preferred spices, or a washable tablecloth for outdoor meals
