Overview of the Station

Sagehen Creek Field Station provides essential accommodations and infrastructure to support researchers, educators, and students exploring the Sierra Nevada ecosystem. The station features a range of facilities, including bunkhouse cabins, communal areas, indoor and outdoor classrooms, and fully equipped laboratories designed to meet the needs of diverse visitors.

Set within a 452-acre core research area surrounded by the expansive 9,000-acre Sagehen Experimental Forest, the station offers access to diverse ecosystem types such as alpine meadows, montane forests, riparian zones, and subalpine habitats. These varied landscapes make Sagehen an ideal setting for ecological research, hands-on education, and environmental monitoring.

Accommodation and Sleeping Arrangements

The Sagehen Creek Field Station provides a variety of sleeping arrangements to accommodate researchers, educators, and students. The station is divided into three main areas: Lower Camp (Main Camp), Upper Camp, and Leopold Camp, each offering unique accommodations tailored to different group sizes and needs.

Station facilities include 69 year-round bunkhouse-style beds across fully winterized buildings, most of which have seasonal propane heat from November through May (no heat during other months). Beds are twin-size, with a limited number of full or queen-size beds available for faculty or group leaders. Additionally, the station offers up to 20 tent-camping spaces within designated camping zones, providing flexibility for larger groups or those seeking a more rustic experience.

Lower Camp (Main Camp)

The central hub of Sagehen Creek Field Station, Lower Camp is where most visitors stay and gather. It includes:

  • Bunkhouses: Multiple heated cabins, each with bunk beds for 4–8 people
  • Private Cabins: Small rooms for instructors or group leaders (limited availability)
  • Key Features:
    • Shared communal kitchen and dining areas
    • Bathrooms and hot showers are located nearby for convenience, along with a washer and dryer for visitor use

Upper Camp

Located uphill, Upper Camp offers a quieter setting, ideal for smaller groups or individual visitors. It features:

  • Cabins: Rustic-style cabins with bunk beds for 4–8 people
  • Bathhouse: A bathhouse is available in Upper Camp, providing additional restroom and shower facilities, as well as a washing machine for extended stays
  • Camping: Designated camping areas are located on the uphill side of Sagehen Road
  • Key Features:
    • Close proximity to outdoor classrooms and hiking trails
    • Shared use of Lower Camp’s kitchen and communal facilities

Leopold Camp

Situated in a more remote area, Leopold Camp is perfect for long-term research groups or those seeking a rustic, secluded experience. It includes:

  • Seasonal Cabins: Two small, unheated cabins with limited solar power, suitable for warmer months
  • Tent Platforms: Raised platforms perfect for pitching tents, accommodating 4–6 people per platform
  • Camping: Additional camping areas provide flexibility for larger groups
  • Key Features:
    • Basic amenities, including a shared outhouse with Upper Camp

Lower Camp

  • Communal Commercial Kitchen: A fully equipped kitchen with stoves, refrigerators, and ample counter space for meal preparation, perfect for group dining
  • Indoor Dining Hall: A spacious dining area for groups to share meals in a comfortable setting
  • Outdoor Dining Area: A covered deck with seating, offering scenic views and fresh air for outdoor meals
  • Library: A quiet space for reading, writing, and small group discussions, located in the heart of Lower Camp

Upper Camp

  • Outdoor Classroom Facility: A large covered area capable of accommodating up to 80 people, ideal for educational workshops and meetings in a natural setting

Additional Amenities

  • Bathhouses: Two modern bathhouses with flush toilets, hot showers, and sinks for visitor convenience. One is located in Lower Camp, while the other is available in Upper Camp.
  • Laundry Facilities: Two washing machines are available in Lower Camp for extended stays
  • Wi-Fi Access: Wireless internet is available but limited in speed due to the remote location
  • Meeting and Teaching Spaces:
    • Two indoor classrooms with capacities of 24 and 16 people
    • Outdoor classroom seating for up to 80 people, perfect for larger gatherings or workshops
